200th Anniversary Edition
William Smith was discharged from the army on half-pay after the end of the Napoleonic Wars. A short time later, in 1821, he invested his military pay, along with the proceeds of other investments, in the construction of the Wolfburn Distillery.
The original distillery was one of the largest in the Highlands, and its whisky found its way into the hands of discerning customers far and wide. Today, as custodians of Smith’s heritage, the modern distillery produces whisky in much the same way as the original: our master craftsmen select the finest malt, which is fermented and distilled by hand, with no mechanical intervention. Casks are also hand-selected, and the spirit is allowed to gently mature in our purpose-built warehouses.
In light of the significance of Wolfburn’s 200th anniversary, they have selected some of their very best casks: first-fill Oloroso sherry hogsheads, laid down some six years ago, and to cap such a special dram they’ve added some whisky from their very first cask, filled back in January 2013. The design of the label and box is a celebration of our Caithness heritage, consisting of 1821 sequentially numbered bottles – and the whisky inside is a rare treat: a true gem of a Highland single malt. Here’s to the next 200 years!
ON THE NOSE – Figs and apricots mix with soft oak tones. Oloroso sherry warmth comes gently to the fore.
ON THE PALATE – The depth of flavour is tremendous. Honey-laced porridge meets stewed apples and sultanas. Wolfburn’s trademark smooth spirit brings with it a touch of heat while soft oak spices – cinnamon and cloves and ginger – are also present, all overlaid by a wonderful sweetness.
THE FINISH – Does not disappoint; dried fruit and caramel flavours remain to the end and are neatly overlaid with hints of lingering oak smoke.
