Great Earl Single Grain Irish Whiskey is a combination of Rechar-barrelled grain Irish whiskey and virgin oak grain, matured for 45 months and then merged to spend a further minimum period of 3 months in ex-Sangiovese casks, sourced exclusively for us from the Lazio region of Italy, a nod to the final resting place of the Great Earl in the Vatican in Rome.
Hugh “The Great Earl” O Neill, a celebrated general, was undaunted despite the odds.
Having rescued Red Hugh O Donnell, following his escape from Dublin Castle, they fought side-by-side with Juan del Aguila, “the Spanish Earl,” at the Battle of Kinsale in 1601.
Leaving Ireland in the Flight of the Earls in 1607, he died in Rome nine years later, where he is still buried and immortalised in a fresco in Vatican City.
Friend to kings, popes and leaders, we have reflected his story in this unique Single Grain Irish Whiskey, casked in Rechar and Virgin oak, then finished in Italian Sangiovese casks, a nod to his final days in Rome.

Kinsale Spirit Great Earl Tasting Notes from Whisky Center:
- Nose: Sweet, reminiscent of candy, with vanilla and cask influence, woody, and buttery notes akin to marzipan.
- Colour: A medium golden hue with a subtle ruby red from the Sangiovese cask, presenting a slight pinkish tinge.
- Taste: Sweet with flavors of ripe blackberry and honey, complemented by a hint of tartness and sharpness, alongside notes of elderberry. Additionally, there’s a touch of white pepper spice and a slight tannic quality from the wine.
- Finish: A creamy mouthfeel that nicely coats the mouth. It is mid-bodied with a decent length and a robust finish.
